Emergency services have activated a rescue plan following an incident involving tourists trapped in an ice cave at Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, west of Jökulsárlón. Two helicopters from the Coast Guard have been dispatched, along with rescue teams and police.

The accident occurred when parts of the ice cave collapsed, injuring some tourists. It remains unclear how many people are injured or the severity of their injuries. Some visitors are still trapped inside the cave, while others are located outside.

Conditions at the scene are extremely challenging. Hjördís Guðmundsdóttir, a spokesperson for the civil protection authority, has reported that specially trained rescuers are on their way to assist. A medical evacuation helicopter is also en route to transport the injured to Landspítali, a major hospital.

Authorities are working to assess the situation and get a clearer understanding of the number of injured individuals. The rescue efforts have been complicated by difficult weather and environmental conditions.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with exploring natural attractions such as ice caves, especially in challenging terrains like those found in Iceland’s glaciers. Emergency responders continue their efforts in what is expected to be a lengthy and arduous rescue operation.
