In Kouvola, a protest was held in support of retaining night emergency services at Ratamokeskus, drawing 600 to 800 participants according to activist Taru Salmi. “The atmosphere is really positive and hopeful. It’s fantastic to see such strong public support. I hope we will receive good news soon,” Salmi commented after the demonstration.

The Finnish government plans to close these night services for budgetary reasons. Protesters initially gathered in front of the city hall before marching to the Ratamokeskus, creating a human chain in front of the hospital. “This represents the community spirit and our determination. We won’t give up,” said Salmi.

Political figures have also weighed in on the issue. Last Thursday, Antti Kaikkonen, leader of the Centre Party, called for the cancellation of the closure plans. Finance Minister Riikka Purra expressed that the decision to shut down the emergency services in Kouvola might still be overturned. A legislative proposal concerning hospitals is expected to be published after mid-September.

Previously, demonstrations have occurred, including an initial rally in the spring in Kouvola, followed by another in early July in Helsinki, aiming to preserve the night emergency services at Ratamokeskus.
