June Rishaug discovered her passion for long mountain hikes after a memorable night out a year ago. This summer, she dedicated her entire vacation to hiking, completing a remarkable 21 consecutive days on the trails.

Psychologist Johanne Refseth, known as the “Psychologist in a Sleeping Bag,” emphasizes the positive effects of time in nature on mental health, though she acknowledges it’s not a panacea for everyone. She stresses the need to differentiate between general unhappiness and serious mental health issues, noting that a stroll in the woods may not suffice for those facing significant problems.

Before last summer, Rishaug had only hiked around 5 kilometers on the mountains near Bodø. However, after attending a midnight hike with friends, she found herself drawn to the outdoors. This single eight-hour hike was unlike anything she had previously experienced.

Throughout her adventure along the Nordland Route, where seven individuals traversed the trails together, Rishaug encountered breathtaking landscapes, experienced the midnight sun, and forged new friendships—all significant contributors to her well-being.

The therapeutic benefits of hiking and being in nature are supported by international research, which shows that exposure to outdoor environments can lower stress levels and enhance mood.

Rishaug describes her hiking experience as not just physical but transformative. “It feels like awakening,” she said, highlighting how disconnecting from everyday distractions has improved her self-awareness.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian Trekking Association is witnessing a membership surge, reflecting a growing recognition of the health benefits associated with outdoor activities. As of August, membership numbers surpassed previous records, indicating a surge in public engagement with nature and hiking.
