Nature conservation organization Náttúrugríð has filed a complaint against the municipality of Norðurþing for granting a permit for forestation in Saltvík. The organization is also requesting that similar projects in Þverá be halted.

This summer, land was cleared for forestation under the pretext of carbon sequestration. The company Yggdrasill Carbon oversaw the land preparation and sells certified carbon credits to businesses. Snæbjörn Guðmundsson, chair of Náttúrugríð, commented that this project should have undergone an environmental assessment, noting that the area is considered an important ecosystem that always warrants such scrutiny. He emphasized that the company should take pride in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Náttúrugríð insists that these operations should cease immediately and has requested expedited handling from the Environmental and Natural Resource Complaints Board to prevent irreversible actions.
