Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of mpox a global health emergency. Shortly after, Sweden reported its first case of mpox variant 1, leading to a surge in vaccination interest. Health authorities in various regions noted a significant uptick in inquiries about the vaccine.

According to Hedvig Elander, press officer for Region Stockholm, the vaccination clinic is fully booked until mid to late October. While many are seeking vaccinations, few are eligible due to travel plans, as individual assessments are made for those planning to visit areas with high transmission rates.

The Public Health Agency of Sweden recommends vaccination for specific groups, including men and transgender individuals who have sex with men, as well as travelers to high-risk regions. However, many concerned individuals who do not fall into these categories are also reaching out for vaccinations. Johan Lundin, a nurse at Akademiska Hospital, emphasizes the importance of addressing these concerns and providing information to alleviate fears.

State epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén acknowledges that fear of a new pandemic may drive some to seek vaccination despite not being in a recommended group. He reassures the public that mpox is not likely to cause a pandemic akin to COVID-19, as it is a well-known disease with established management practices and available vaccines.

The latest vaccination recommendations from the Public Health Agency focus on specific groups traveling to mpox-endemic areas.
