Eivind Borge, a senior police officer in Norway, has dedicated years to dismantling hidden networks in the Norwegian criminal underworld and leading investigations against organized crime at Kripos, Norway’s national police service. He is now set to transition to a role at Interpol, the international police organization, where he will focus on combating organized crime related to counterfeiting, copyright infringement, and piracy.

Borge elaborated on the scope of this work, noting that while many associate counterfeiting primarily with luxury goods like Louis Vuitton bags, the issue extends to critical areas such as pharmaceuticals and aircraft parts. The potential risks are stark; incorrect aircraft components could lead to catastrophic outcomes, and counterfeit medications can pose direct harm to individuals’ health.

Interpol operates out of Lyon, France, and Borge emphasized the organization’s role in spreading expertise across different regions to enhance global efforts against organized crime. He plans to spend four years at Interpol, where he aims to shine a light on the hidden criminal activities that are often overlooked in Norway.

Borge reflected on the need for greater awareness regarding international crime, suggesting that Norwegians may possess a degree of naivety due to their trust-based society. He stressed the importance of recognizing that criminal networks are expanding globally, making it essential for Norway to remain vigilant and informed.

As European borders become more porous and technology advances, it presents challenges for law enforcement. Borge noted the ongoing collaboration between Norwegian police, Interpol, and Europol to effectively address these evolving threats to society.
