Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has appointed Tore O. Sandvik as the acting Minister of Climate and Environment, while current minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen is on parental leave. Eriksen, who welcomed his second child in January, will be away from September 2 until the end of the year.

Støre expressed confidence in Sandvik’s ability to handle this crucial role, citing his extensive experience. Sandvik, a member of the Labour Party (Ap), served as the county mayor of Trøndelag from 2003 to 2023 and currently holds the position of Secretary of State in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries. He emphasizes the importance of addressing climate and environmental issues, warning that failure to meet set goals would lead to dire consequences for future generations.

However, some environmental organizations question Sandvik’s qualifications and commitment to robust environmental policy. Karoline Andaur, Secretary General of WWF Norway, noted that Sandvik has not previously advocated for stronger environmental measures and expressed concerns about the ambition level he may adopt.

Truls Gulowsen, leader of the Nature Conservation Association, also expressed surprise at the appointment, given Sandvik’s limited visibility in climate matters. He looks forward to collaboration with Sandvik and hopes that his political experience will allow him to quickly adapt to this vital field.

As acting minister, Sandvik will lead Norway’s delegation at significant international climate and nature summits, including upcoming meetings in Colombia and Azerbaijan. Støre assured that Norway remains committed to its climate goals, despite the challenges posed by global events. He underlined the need for strong leadership and collaboration to achieve these objectives.
