Man in custody following deaths of couple in Neskaupstaður
A man in custody related to the deaths of a couple in Neskaupstaður is facing a request for pre-trial detention to be submitted later today. The police investigation is also focusing on whether a weapon was used in the incident.
The authorities received a report yesterday at around 12:30 PM about two elderly individuals found dead in their apartment on Strandgata in Neskaupstaður. The circumstances indicated potential foul play.
Suspicion centered on a man believed to have taken the couple’s car and fled the scene. After significant investigation efforts, the police arrested him in Reykjavik at 2 PM.
Kristján Ólafur Guðnason, a chief police officer in East Iceland, confirmed, “There is one person under suspicion, and no one else at this point.” He added that inquiries are being made into whether a weapon was involved.
The request for custody will be presented later today, and an ongoing crime scene investigation is supported by the technical department of the capital police and a forensic pathologist. Kristján stated that the investigation is progressing well and that a clear understanding of the events has emerged.
In the next few days, investigators plan to further question witnesses and the suspect as they continue to analyze the collected evidence.
