SAS cabin crew strike leads to flight cancellations between Oslo and Trondheim

On Friday, cabin crew members at SAS went on strike after negotiations collapsed early in the morning. Two flights between Oslo and Trondheim have already been canceled, and further cancellations are anticipated if the strike expands. Officials have indicated that a significant escalation is planned; if an agreement is not reached this week, it could greatly affect SAS’s flight operations.

By the middle of next week, the impact is expected to be much more extensive, possibly resulting in many more canceled flights. Currently, 115 out of 640 members of the cabin crew union are participating in the strike. An additional 19 will join on Saturday, followed by 16 more on Sunday, bringing the total to 152 striking cabin employees by the end of the weekend.

Travelers affected by the strike have certain entitlements. If a flight is canceled, passengers must be rebooked as soon as possible. If this is not feasible, they can book a new flight and demand reimbursement from the airline. Compensation for cancellations typically starts at €250 and can go up to €600, depending on the flight distance.

It is crucial for those impacted to inform SAS that they wish to travel and to stay alert for any updates about new flights. While airlines previously could deny compensation during strikes, a 2018 European Court ruling established that passengers are entitled to reimbursement when the strike involves the airline’s employees. This includes coverage for extra expenses incurred due to cancellations, such as accommodation or food.

Despite the strike, flight operations are reportedly running normally for now. Passengers are advised to keep all receipts and monitor any communication from the airline regarding their itinerary. Some travelers, like Hilde and Kristine Hynne, expressed anxiety about potential flight cancellations as they prepare for their journey to New York, but they remain hopeful that their travel plans will proceed smoothly.
