An eruption has begun in the Sundhnúkur volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula at 21:26, following a series of significant earthquakes that started about an hour beforehand. Approximately one hour after the eruption commenced, the fissure had extended nearly four kilometers.

The growth of the fissure has slowed, suggesting that the eruption is stabilizing. The fissure has lengthened slightly to the north. The local police chief has announced a reduction in emergency response overnight, although the area will remain secured.

As the event unfolds, international travelers arriving at Keflavík Airport expressed awe at the visuals of the eruption. Among them was Michael Ruby from the Czech Republic, as well as others from Brazil, who described the experience as an extraordinary spectacle.

At the same time, the eruption’s peak flow rate is estimated at around 2,000 cubic meters per second, with lava primarily flowing east and north as it approaches the Grindavíkur road. If the flow continues at the current rate, it could reach the hot water pipeline leading to Grindavík within approximately six hours. Plans are in place to reinforce the pipeline should lava encroach on it.

Officials indicate that both Grindavík and Svartsengi are not currently considered at risk. The situation is being closely monitored, with additional evaluations planned for later at night and in the morning. The public has been advised to avoid the area and follow developments from a distance, emphasizing that this situation remains hazardous.
