Eruption begins at Sundhnúkagígar on Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland

An eruption has commenced at the Sundhnúkagígar geological formation on the Reykjanes Peninsula, beginning at 21:26 local time, following an intense seismic activity that began about an hour earlier. The fissure has already stretched nearly four kilometers as of approximately an hour into the eruption.

Experts have noted that this eruption is marked by some differences compared to previous events. For example, there appears to be minimal activity in the southern section of the fissure, which is a positive indicator as no lava flow is currently threatening the nearby town of Grindavík. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, considering the favorable conditions thus far.

Weather conditions, including strong northerly winds, are aiding in directing smoke and gas from the eruption away from populated areas, as Grindavík has already been evacuated. The eruption’s starting point is similar to that of the previous ones this year, which raises concerns about potential further volcanic activity.

Lava is reportedly moving towards nearby routes but precautions, such as fortified barriers, have been established. Local officials are emphasizing the importance of keeping a safe distance from the area, reiterating that the situation can change rapidly.

As emergency responses are activated, the public is advised to stay informed and avoid the vicinity of the eruption to ensure safety for both residents and visitors. The ongoing volcanic activity is part of a broader series of eruptions in the region, with experts cautioning on the unpredictability of future developments.
