The police in East Iceland are preparing to request custody for a man arrested in Reykjavik today in connection with the deaths of a couple discovered in Neskaupstaður. Authorities believe no one else is linked to the case. The suspect is awaiting police interrogation.

Kristján Ólafur Guðnason, the chief police officer in East Iceland, confirmed that the couple, both older adults, were found deceased in their home. While the circumstances of their deaths remain unverified, it has been reported that the man allegedly took the couple’s car last night and was apprehended in Reykjavik later in the day.

Upon receiving a report around noon about concerns for the couple’s well-being, police responded promptly with significant resources, including patrol cars and a helicopter from the Coast Guard. The investigation at the scene continued well into the evening, leading to the closure of a major street in Neskaupstaður.

No further details regarding the police’s suspicions were disclosed, although Kristján emphasized that the investigation indicated no additional suspects were involved at this time.

The local community has been deeply affected by this incident, along with another tragedy where a man in his forties died from a hunting accident earlier this week. Jon Björn Hákonarson, the chairman of the municipal council in Fjarðabyggð, expressed the impact of these events on the tight-knit community.

A memorial service for the victim of the hunting incident is scheduled for this evening. The local council plans to provide support in collaboration with trauma teams from the East Iceland Health Institution, underscoring the importance of community solidarity during such trying times.
