Residents of Grindavík, despite the looming threat of volcanic eruptions, remain steadfast in their community, preparing for any eventualities with travel bags ready by their front doors. Eiríkur Óli Dagbjartsson, a local, mentioned he would back his car into the driveway to make a quick escape if emergency sirens sounded, yet he insists there is no better place to be than Grindavík.

A nearby hill of volcanic soil has formed, obscuring previous scenic views of the ocean and surrounding mountains, which Eiríkur recalls fondly. The volcanic mound has, however, demonstrated its worth as new lava flows have developed nearby.

Many, like Eiríkur, choose to stay in Grindavík. “We are somewhat living out of a suitcase,” he said, affirming that they feel at home there despite the uncertainties. Police officials have advised against staying, emphasizing the unpredictability of eruptions. Nevertheless, Eiríkur feels secure due to the monitoring efforts of meteorological authorities and the good location of his home.

Preparations are crucial, as fellow resident Gylfi Hauksson detailed, with bags packed and essentials like clothing and medications ready to go. They also have a caravan set up in Sandgerði as a backup. Gylfi finds the ongoing tremors exhausting but feels the need to stay prepared.

Describing life in Grindavík, Gylfi likened it to being in a cabin community during the week, where one learns to adapt to limited services. Both men expressed their deep-rooted attachments to Grindavík, emphasizing their reluctance to leave their home behind.
