The police in East Iceland are preparing to request custody over a man arrested in Reykjavik today, connected to the discovery of a deceased couple in Neskaupstaður. It is believed that no one else is involved in the case.

The bodies of an elderly couple were found at their home today. While the cause of death has not yet been confirmed, police had been looking for one individual in connection with the investigation. Reports indicate that this man took the couple’s vehicle overnight and was arrested later in the day on Snorrabraut in Reykjavik.

Police received a notification just after noon from individuals concerned about the couple’s well-being, prompting an immediate response. A significant police presence, including specialized units and ambulances, was deployed to the area. The investigation at the scene extended into the late afternoon, leading to the closure of a major street in Neskaupstaður.

Police Chief Kristján Ólafur Guðnason stated that the investigation is focused solely on the man in custody, and there are currently no other suspects. He emphasized that the investigative team has no evidence suggesting otherwise.

The events of the week have deeply affected the local community, as noted by Jón Björn Hákonarson, the mayor of Fjardabyggd. He expressed the need for unity and support among residents during this tragic time, highlighting the importance of caring for those who are grieving.

Additionally, a memorial service is scheduled for tonight for a man who died on Tuesday due to a hunting accident, which further underscores the community’s recent tragedies. Local officials are coordinating with support teams to assist those in need during this difficult period.
