A recommendation for changes to the national school law has been presented to Djóna Nolsøe Joensen, the Minister of Education and Gender Equality. However, children in special education classes were notably excluded from this proposal.

This omission is particularly significant given that nearly one in five students in public schools are currently enrolled in special education.

In a recent discussion, Bárður á Lakjuni, a member of the Parliament representing the People’s Party, shared insights on this issue. He emphasized the importance of addressing the educational needs of all children, including those in special programs, to ensure equitable access to quality education.

The call for reform comes at a time when there is growing awareness of the diverse needs of students, and many advocates are pushing for more inclusive approaches within the education system. The aim is to revise the legislation to better support not just mainstream students, but also to ensure that those who benefit from special education are not left behind.

As the Minister reviews the proposal, there are hopes that it will encompass a more comprehensive framework that supports every student’s right to a tailored and effective learning experience. The outcomes of these discussions could have lasting implications on the education landscape in the country, shaping how schools adapt to the diverse needs of their students moving forward.
