Local communities in Iceland face trailer removal challenges as school year begins

Local communities in Iceland have invited residents to use school parking lots for storing travel trailers over the summer months. As the school year begins, staff and students are returning, and the removal of these trailers from the parking spaces has been uneven.

In Hafnarfjörður, trailer owners were given until August 11 to clear their vehicles. However, at Lækjarskóli, one trailer remains unclaimed. School office personnel are attempting to contact the owner to facilitate its removal before classes start tomorrow.

The situation is more problematic at Sjálandsskóli in Garðabær. Silja Kristjánsdóttir, the department head, sent a reminder to local residents yesterday, urging them to remove their trailers. Twelve trailers still occupy the school’s parking spaces and could be towed at owners’ expense if not collected soon.

Silja emphasized that while the use of the parking lot is appreciated, it is essential for the school staff to have access to these spaces with the school year commencing tomorrow. “We want to primarily resolve this in good cooperation with the residents here in the neighborhood,” she stated, expressing hope that towing the trailers will not be necessary.

As communities prepare for the new school year, the removal of travel trailers remains a pressing issue, balancing community use of public parking facilities with the needs of local schools.
