Snowfall is expected in the mountains of northern Iceland through Saturday, as the Icelandic Meteorological Office warns of an increased risk of landslides due to heavy precipitation. The heaviest rainfall is forecasted for today and tomorrow, with a decrease expected before clearer skies emerge on Sunday. Temperatures in lowland areas are anticipated to reach four to six degrees Celsius, where precipitation will predominantly fall as rain, while snow conditions will prevail in the mountains.

According to forecasts, the highest rainfall will occur in the North-Western Fjords, the Strandir region, the Tröllaskagi peninsula, eastern Tindastóll, Flateyjarskagi, Tjörnes, and Hellisheiði Eystri. Significant rainfall is also expected in East Borgarfjörður over the next 24 hours.

In recent days, northern regions have experienced considerable rainfall, leading to damp soil conditions that heighten the risk of landslides and rockfalls during the ongoing rain. Residents and travelers are advised to exercise caution when navigating steep slopes, remain vigilant of their surroundings, and avoid lingering below riverbanks. The Meteorological Office further notes that landslides can occur even after the heaviest rain has passed. Rain accumulation is projected over the next 72 hours.
