Last Friday, a traditional initiation event for first-year students at Matinkylä High School in Espoo escalated uncontrollably at Klobben Beach, according to multiple participants. Finnish broadcaster Yle interviewed four first-year students, who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the situation and the risk of bullying. The incident involved older students shooting vinegar-filled water guns at younger peers, with reports that vinegar was deliberately aimed at eyes, causing potential eye damage. According to Yle, at least one student sought medical attention for an eye infection resulting from the vinegar.

The aftermath of the chaotic celebration was visible, with remnants littering Klobben Beach. Participants were subjected to various humiliating tasks, including crawling through a kiddie pool filled with seawater and food. They were ordered to comply with embarrassing positions, with one student recalling a female peer being verbally abused for partnering with another girl.

Failure to obey older students’ commands resulted in vinegar being sprayed on the disobedient. Younger students were also pelted with raw and boiled eggs. They faced further humiliation, including having flour, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and buttermilk thrown at them, and were even whipped with nettles. Some younger students left the event early due to distress, expressing feelings of sadness and confusion over the unexpected nature of the event.

Authorities have raised concerns about the necessity of such initiation traditions, with the Helsinki police commenting that while there were no formal crime reports related to recent events, the behavior might constitute assault depending on circumstances. The ongoing discussion highlights the need for a reevaluation of hierarchical dynamics among students.
