The Swedish government has reconvened at the Prime Minister’s summer residence in Harpsund to address pressing political issues ahead of the autumn session. One significant point of contention involves the Sweden Democrats (SD) and the Liberals (L), particularly regarding climate and environmental policies. Disagreements have arisen over items such as the proposed aviation tax.

The Liberals aim to establish themselves as the “green voice” in the government, but they face challenges. Recent criticisms highlight that the party has struggled under the burden of previous decisions, particularly regarding carbon reduction mandates and fuel tax cuts. Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari has frequently found herself under scrutiny.

Additionally, the Christian Democrats (KD) have also contributed to discord in negotiations. Reports indicate that while KD’s leader, Ebba Busch, maintains a strong public stance, different views have emerged during talks, creating tension. Recently, Busch called for a more expansive budget, which has been met with irritation from other coalition partners who believe such matters fall outside her purview.

Political analyst Tomas Nordenskiöld warns that the autumn could test the strength of the Tidö Agreement due to increasing pressure on the smaller parties and unresolved conflicts within the coalition, such as issues related to information obligations and bans on begging. He suggests that significant challenges lie ahead as the parties prepare for the forthcoming discussions.

On Thursday, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson is expected to announce the government’s budgetary plans for the fall.
