Students at Oulu Vocational College have responded positively to a new vegetable intake recommendation. In an inquiry at the OSAO Kaukovainio campus cafeteria, Yle sought their opinions about the updated dietary guidelines. Going forward, the daily vegetable intake will increase from 500 grams to 800 grams, a change that will be part of Finland’s new nutritional recommendations set to be published in November. The goal of these recommendations is to reduce red meat consumption while encouraging increased vegetable intake.

Many students reported that they currently follow existing guidelines, and the suggestion of consuming 800 grams of vegetables daily does not seem daunting. “The new recommendation is excellent as we receive many beneficial nutrients from vegetables. I believe it is better for us to eat more vegetables than other food items,” said student Madiha Waheed.

However, not all students are convinced they can meet the new target. Hanna Saarinen and Julia Häkkinen expressed skepticism. “There’s no room for anything else but vegetables in my stomach,” commented Saarinen. While Häkkinen added, “It sounds like a lot because I haven’t even reached half a kilo yet.”

The shift in recommendations reflects a broader movement in Finland towards healthier eating habits, aiming to foster a better balance in diets among the population.
