Canadian environmental and whale activist Paul Watson has been a polarizing figure for decades due to his controversial methods. Currently, he is imprisoned in Greenland while awaiting a decision from Denmark on whether to extradite him to Japan.

According to Jens Sejrup, an assistant professor of Japan Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark’s decision on Watson’s extradition could significantly impact the relationship between Denmark and Japan, which has historically been positive. Sejrup notes, “The relationship between Denmark and Japan will heavily depend on what Denmark decides.”

Since 2012, Watson has been wanted internationally via Interpol for allegedly violating laws with his activist tactics, according to Japan. He was arrested on July 21 after stopping in Greenland to refuel his ship, following a warrant issued by Japanese authorities.

Because Denmark initially complied with Japan’s arrest warrant, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard is advised to proceed cautiously in determining the next steps in the case. Sejrup warns that Denmark could find itself in a precarious position if it reacts favorably to the extradition request after having already arrested Watson. “Denmark needs to have a solid argument for why they arrested him if they ultimately decide not to extradite,” he emphasizes.
