Increase in bicycle thefts reported in Reykjavik area, targeting electric bikes

There has been a noticeable increase in bicycle thefts from retail stores in the Reykjavik area this summer, particularly involving electric bikes. Authorities have reported that since the end of April, there have been five reported break-ins at bicycle shops, resulting in the theft of a total of twelve bikes.

The shops specifically targeted include Örninn, Kríu, Peloton, TRI, and Púkann, and police indicate that valuable electric bikes were primarily stolen. An officer remarked that such a surge in store burglaries is unusual, noting that while individual bikes may be stolen from public spaces or shared areas, the frequency of break-ins at stores has increased significantly, indicating a market for such bikes.

Investigators suspect that individuals with substance abuse problems may be behind these thefts, as they are likely trying to raise funds. It has been suggested that these burglars might sell the stolen bikes to third parties.

One retailer reported that they initially thought only two bikes were stolen, but eventually discovered that five had been taken during a break-in two months ago. Among the stolen items were high-value electric mountain bikes and a staff bike.

There are efforts underway to enhance security measures, with police encouraging shop owners and bike owners to install GPS trackers on their bikes. This would assist law enforcement in recovering stolen items.
