Severi Koivisto, a 32-year-old university student from Jyväskylä, was a member of a Lutheran congregation until June of this year when he joined the Orthodox Church in Jyväskylä. Koivisto, who grew up in Southern Ostrobothnia, first encountered Orthodox practices at his grandmother’s husband’s funeral. This experience sparked his interest in the faith, prompting him to independently explore Orthodoxy and enroll in an introductory catechumen course at the Jyväskylä Orthodox Church.

The catechumen course is designed to familiarize participants with the teachings, history, and culture of the Orthodox Church, particularly for those considering joining. Koivisto has also started attending church services, expressing admiration for the prayerful atmosphere: “The services feature beautiful singing, presence, and moments of quiet.” His experience at Valamo Monastery in Heinävesi left a significant impact on him, deepening his contemplation about joining the Orthodox Church.

The Orthodox Church in Finland is witnessing a youthful trend among its membership. Over 30% of its 56,000 members are under 29 years old, with approximately 900 to 1,000 joining annually. Last year, the Jyväskylä Orthodox congregation alone welcomed 50 new members, double the typical number.

Kaarlo Saarento, the parish priest, notes that many recent newcomers are men in search of stability and tradition, while others are drawn to the church’s teachings and liturgy. Approximately 77% of new members in Jyväskylä are under 40, indicating a growing trend among young adults seeking deeper meaning in life amidst modern societal changes. Koivisto, who has felt warmly welcomed by the congregation, reflects on the unique values and community that Orthodoxy offers to young adults.
