Adenovirus cases surge among conscripts at Kainuu Brigade in Finland

In the Kainuu Brigade at Hoikankangas, measures are being intensified to contain cases of adenovirus. The number of adenovirus infections and related respiratory symptoms among conscripts has rapidly increased over the past two weeks. Jukka Vuorisalmi, chief of staff at the Kainuu Brigade, reports that hundreds of conscripts are seeking care at the base hospital daily, exhibiting various flu-like and respiratory symptoms. Notably, 85 percent of those tested have been confirmed to have adenovirus.

Vuorisalmi explains that the challenge lies in the virus’s long incubation period, which is only now becoming evident as testing has been ramped up. In response, the base has implemented the use of face masks indoors and during transport, and soldiers are required to sit in separate tables by unit in communal areas. Additionally, the Heikinhalli sports facility will be converted into an extra rest area for those who are ill.

The situation is monitored daily, with tighter restrictions considered if necessary to prevent further spread. Vuorisalmi notes that there has been a significant increase in adenovirus cases compared to other military units, prompting these measures.

Reserve training exercises and voluntary activities by the Defense Forces will continue as planned. Participants are required to arrive healthy, with health status assessed upon arrival to the exercises. For example, reserve training units are prohibited from close contact with conscripts and other personnel.
