This afternoon, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign and Trade Affairs are discussing the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The government has long been working to achieve independent membership for the Faroe Islands in the global trade organization. Ongoing negotiations have taken place with the Danish government regarding this matter.

However, an agreement that would pave the way for Faroe Islands’ membership in the WTO has yet to be reached.

The Prime Minister’s office emphasized that independent membership in the WTO will continue to be prioritized by the government, as stated in the supplementary report presented during the national holiday, Ólavsøku.

The materials being discussed at today’s meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee are not publicly available and remain confidential.

Back in April, the Prime Minister had already indicated intentions to bring the matter of WTO membership to the Foreign Affairs Committee.
