Government discusses WTO membership for Faroe Islands in Copenhagen

This afternoon, the Foreign Affairs Committee, along with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, convened to discuss the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The government has long been pursuing independent membership for the Faroe Islands in the global trade organization. Ongoing negotiations have taken place with the Danish government regarding this matter.

However, a consensus to pave the way for Faroese membership in the WTO has yet to be reached.

The goal of achieving independent Faroese membership in the WTO continues to be a priority for the government, as noted in the Prime Minister’s supplementary report for the National Day celebrations.

The materials to be discussed at today’s Foreign Affairs Committee meeting are confidential and not publicly available.

Back in April, the Prime Minister announced intentions to advance discussions regarding the Faroe Islands’ status with the WTO.
