The Minister of Infrastructure has announced significant transportation improvements in the capital region within the next two years, despite substantial delays in the updated transport agreement. The cost of these projects is expected to reach 310 billion ISK, with part of the funding sourced from tolls.

The revised transport agreement introduces a rapid transit system known as Borgarlínan. Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir stated that enhancing the environment and infrastructure surrounding Borgarlínan is a priority. She emphasized that Strætó, the public bus service, will play a critical role in connecting passengers to neighborhoods, expressing anticipation for visible changes within the next 18 to 24 months.

Finance Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson explained that numerous projects are already underway, reflecting a long-term vision established in 2019 aimed at integrating various public transport initiatives, as well as infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians. The goal is to make traffic smoother, safer, and more environmentally friendly.

The project timeline has now extended from 15 to 22 years, with the agreement scheduled to be presented to local municipalities in the capital region. Mayor Regína Ásvaldsdóttir of Mosfellsbær confirmed extensive work has been done on this major agreement, which outlines plans up to 2040. While she noted some changes from the previous agreement, the core content remains consistent.

Overall, infrastructure improvements are set to alter the landscape of transportation in Iceland’s capital, promising a more efficient system for the future.
