Leader suggests two-year completion for special education students in Faroe Islands

A leader at a specialized school in the Faroe Islands has suggested that students in special programs should be allowed to complete their ninth-grade education over the span of two years.

Jóhan Marner Stenberg, the head of Gula Skúlin, which caters specifically to students with unique needs in Tórshavn, emphasized that some students in special classes require additional time to complete their studies. However, he noted that current regulations do not permit such adjustments. This flexibility is already available for students enrolled in the sports program at upper secondary schools.

Stenberg recently spoke at a seminar addressing the increasing number of children in special education programs in public schools. This topic is becoming a prominent issue as the demand for tailored educational solutions continues to rise.

The discussion is particularly pertinent in light of the ongoing efforts to accommodate the diverse needs of students to ensure that all have the opportunity to succeed academically. As awareness grows regarding the unique challenges faced by students in special education, it is hoped that more adaptations will be implemented to support their learning journeys effectively.
