Ullensvang municipality has come under sharp criticism for approving numerous helicopter flights to Trolltunga in recent years, according to a letter from the regional government. Since 2020, the mayor has officiated weddings at the renowned tourist attraction, with an increasing number of ceremonies each year—20 couples this year compared to 13 in 2023. While couples must hike to the site, the mayor is airlifted by helicopter for the occasion.

In June, international artist Kygo filmed a music video at the location, receiving permission for 20 helicopter flights. The regional authority expressed concerns about the increasing helicopter traffic, emphasizing that the music video production does not serve a necessary purpose at Trolltunga.

The regional government believes neither the weddings nor the music video shoot warrants helicopter landings at Trolltunga, highlighting serious concerns regarding Ullensvang’s enforcement of regulations related to motorized traffic in natural areas.

Trolltunga, a rock formation about 1,180 meters above sea level, offers stunning views of nearby landscapes. The area has seen a surge in visitors since Tripadvisor named it one of the world’s most spectacular hiking destinations in 2012, with attendance skyrocketing from under 1,000 visitors in 2010 to 81,000 in 2019.

Regional authorities have requested a meeting with Ullensvang’s leadership to discuss the matter seriously. The mayor defended the events, arguing that both the music video and wedding ceremonies generate significant promotional value for Norway and its natural beauty, indicating a desire for dialogue with the regional government. Meanwhile, Kygo’s music video filmed at Trolltunga has garnered 2.3 million views on YouTube.
