A man in his mid-40s was arrested a few days after a reported incident of abuse, which an injured party had suffered prior to hospitalization. The man was physically weakened before the abuse occurred, and it was through his hospital admittance that police became aware of the situation.

The defendant is accused of preventing the victim from leaving his home and receiving necessary medical care. After two days, the victim managed to escape by negotiating with the defendant. Hospital images reveal numerous injuries on the man’s head and body.

This victim later died in December, attributed to declining health. He had a history of chronic kidney failure, substance abuse, and mental health challenges. The victim’s mother is expected to testify, along with several others who interacted with both the defendant and the victim during that time.

The defendant, who had previously been implicated in a missing person case, was remanded until early November 2023. Earlier this year, police responded again to reports of violence involving the defendant, where a visiting woman alleged she was assaulted with tools.

During his court hearing, the defendant admitted to having become enraged over suspected theft of narcotics by the victim. He acknowledged striking her but downplayed the severity of the acts. Eyewitnesses testified to the violence, depicting a scene where the defendant displayed extreme aggression, including an altercation involving the victim’s dog.

The defendant claimed that since a past case involving a missing person, his life had deteriorated, leading to increased substance use, and he feels stigmatized as a “killer” in the community. His trial continues, with further charges related to the victim’s earlier assault still pending.
