Supermoon shines bright in Örnsköldsvik as locals capture stunning photographs

On the evening of August 19, the phenomenon known as the supermoon can be witnessed for the first time this year. This event occurs when the moon is closer to Earth than usual, resulting in it appearing approximately 30 percent brighter.

Mikael Jonsson from Örnsköldsvik has captured images of the moon for as long as he can remember. “Even before I had a proper camera, I would try to photograph it, although it often just turned out as a dot. But with a camera and a lens, it’s much better,” he noted. For Jonsson, the emotional impact of the image is more important than achieving technical perfection. “If you can convey a feeling, you’ve made significant progress,” he added. Tips for capturing great moon photographs can be found in related videos.

For those who miss the supermoon this evening, there will be additional opportunities in 2024. Supermoons are set to occur again on September 18, October 17, and November 15. Notably, the October supermoon will appear the largest as it will be at its closest point to Earth.
