Students enrolled in special education classes doubles in public schools across Faroe Islands

Monday 19th 2024 on 13:33 in
Faroe Islands

The number of students enrolled in special education classes in public schools has doubled over the past five years.

In 2019, there were 142 students in special education, whereas this year, preliminary figures from the Education Authority indicate there are 301 students.

However, these numbers should be approached with caution.

A regulation was introduced in 2019 to establish a special school or educational offerings, which is one of the factors contributing to the recent increase in student numbers.

The municipalities of Fuglafjørður and Eysturkommun have both submitted applications to create special education classes in their schools.

Listeners can hear more in a news segment featuring Magnus Tausen, a representative from the Education Authority, and Jóhan Marni Stenberg, the principal of Gula School in Argir.
