The renovation of the Joensuu railway yard was completed in early August. This large-scale project, significant by Finnish standards, cost €83 million and took five years from the financing decision to completion. Many structures that are not directly visible to passengers were renewed during the renovation. An outdated safety system was replaced, and old manual switches were replaced with remote-controlled ones. Signage and outdated track sections were also updated.

The new railway yard is considerably safer. Previously, pedestrians crossed the yard in various directions, but it is now fenced off. Passengers will notice changes at the Joensuu railway station, with raised platforms making it easier to board trains with wheelchairs or strollers. An overpass with elevators has been constructed between the tracks, enhancing accessibility at the station.

The project was overseen by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. In the city of Kuopio, a similar renewal of the railway yard is currently underway, with a budget exceeding €40 million, expected to be completed this autumn. This project in Kuopio is also aimed at improving station accessibility and technology. Meanwhile, the railway yard in Lappeenranta has yet to undergo renovation.
