Today marked the celebration of Bharat Divas, or India Day, in Helsinki’s Meripuisto park, held for the 18th time. This event coincided with the Indian Embassy in Finland commemorating 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Finland. India gained independence from British rule in 1947, with diplomatic ties established a couple of years later in 1949.

“The journey over the past 75 years has been incredible,” said Hemant H. Kotalwar, the new Indian Ambassador to Finland, who began his post a month ago. He highlighted that diplomatic relations were initiated when Finland opened its embassy in Delhi, with India following suit much later in 1968.

The event attracted participants of all ages and showcased vibrant Indian culture, including traditional attire and performances. The India-Finland Society displayed various Indian products and local dishes, with last year’s event drawing over 30,000 visitors.

Ambassador Kotalwar emphasized that the essence of India Day is to showcase India’s vast diversity to a Finnish audience. “India is like Europe, as each state has its own culture, language, and culinary traditions,” he stated. The day’s festivities included a fashion show reflecting styles from the Karnataka region and a dance performance inspired by traditional Indian movements.

Attendees, including community members and officials, expressed pride in the cultural exchange fostered through this annual celebration. The large Indian diaspora in Finland, comprising around 22,000 individuals, reflects the growing ties between the two nations.
