Denmark

This evening, legal street racing takes place on the streets of Odense, characterized by the smell of burnt rubber and the roar of engines. This event allows speed enthusiasts to unleash their passion in a controlled environment. Precautionary measures have been implemented, vehicles have undergone inspections, drivers are required to wear helmets, and the event has police approval.

Participants race on a 201-meter track in an industrial area, featuring an array of vehicles from family cars to specially built racers. Experienced racer Jørgen Zobel expresses the thrill and sense of joy this event brings, describing it as a release of passion that is hard to put into words. He notes that the emergence of legal street racing has steered him away from illegal activities, although he acknowledges that individual temperament plays a significant role in this shift.

Event organizers, known as Racedays, express a desire to host more legal street racing events, contingent on support from local municipalities and police forces. They emphasize that these events provide a safe outlet for speed enthusiasts, allowing them to indulge in their hobby without risking their driving licenses or vehicles.

The Council for Safe Traffic has previously cautioned against claiming that legal street racing will deter reckless driving, highlighting the complexity of the issue. The street racing event in Odense will continue until midnight.

Conducting legal street races requires police approval, with numerous safety regulations in place. These include area closures, safety measures for spectators, clear access for emergency vehicles, the presence of medics, and liability insurance for organizers.
