The chairman of the Left Green Movement has urged party members to confront the decline in their support openly. During a speech at the party council meeting in Reykjanesbær, he emphasized two potential paths: rebuilding the movement or dismantling it. He characterized the current situation as serious and noted that, throughout the current election term, support for the party has decreased significantly, now sitting at just 3.5 percent, which would prevent them from securing any seats in Parliament.

The chairman, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, pointed out that discussions on environmental issues have been overly simplistic, reducing complex climate challenges to a focus solely on increasing green energy. He expressed concern that such simplification fails to address the real climate crisis, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach to environmental matters.

In his remarks, Guðmundur Ingi also acknowledged the contributions of former party leader Katrín Jakobsdóttir, thanking her for her dedicated service over the past two decades both as a parliamentarian and a minister.

The prevailing rhetoric surrounding environmental issues, he argued, poses a threat by misrepresenting the complexities involved. He called for a more nuanced discussion that integrates the values of leftist politics and environmental protection, prompting party members to reflect critically on their future direction.
