Construction is underway at Rovaniemi’s Someroharju site to accommodate the new F-35 fighter jets of the Lapland Air Command. The project involves not only the construction of completely new facilities but also modifications to existing infrastructure to facilitate operations of the F-35 fleet. Work is progressing simultaneously at various locations, both above ground and in underground shelters, as noted by Lieutenant Colonel Petteri Puusa, Chief of Staff of the Lapland Air Command.

Although the aircraft will operate in the air, significant development is happening underground, including the construction of protective structures for the aircraft and essential systems related to F-35 operations. The project is overseen by the Defense Estates Agency and is reportedly on schedule, according to Puusa. The construction is designed to integrate with normal air command operations, minimizing disruption between ongoing building work and flight activities. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2027, with key facilities ready before the arrival of the first jets in the fall of 2026.

The Finnish Defence Forces will receive the first F-35 fighter jets at the Lapland Air Command, which will operate them until 2060. Preparations for the arrival of these new multi-role fighters began in spring 2023 and include substantial renovations, with total costs around 150 million euros.

Before the jets arrive, personnel from the Lapland Air Command will travel to the United States for training. According to current plans, recruits will depart for training next year, with the first jets expected in Finland in 2026. Initial training will take place in the U.S., similar to what was done for F-18 pilots and mechanics, after which trained personnel will return to Finland to educate subsequent groups. The U.S. training program will cover a wide array of fields, complying with strict safety regulations associated with F-35 operations.
