Sweden faces scrutiny over AR-type firearms use in hunting amid organized crime concerns

In August of last year, Sweden’s Environmental Protection Agency lifted the ban on the use of AR-type firearms for hunting. While these weapons had previously been permitted for activities like sport shooting, the decision to allow them in hunting has faced criticism. Criminologist Leif GW Persson points out that Sweden is grappling with serious organized crime, and allowing the legal use of such weapons during hunting seems contradictory. He contends that the decision has raised concerns among police, as it could potentially lead to an influx of these firearms into the illegal market.

The extent to which criminal elements might adopt hunting firearms remains uncertain. Johan Gustafsson from the National Firearm Centre asserts that gang members predominantly utilize smuggled weapons. He notes that Swedish hunters and gun owners are generally careful about securing their firearms, suggesting that while theft can occur, it is not a significant issue in terms of criminal use.

A recent firearms inquiry submitted to the Justice Department has proposed prohibiting the AR-15 weapon in hunting activities. This ongoing discussion highlights the complex interplay between gun regulation, organized crime, and public safety in Sweden.
