Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that has been recognized since the 1950s and has appeared outside Africa for the first time since 2022. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency due to the increased spread of a new variant, clade 1, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other regions in Africa.

The first confirmed case of this more contagious variant was reported in Sweden, sparking international media coverage. Additionally, three cases have been identified in Pakistan, although the specific variant involved remains unclear. Authorities are emphasizing that mpox should be taken seriously. In contrast to COVID-19, which involved a novel virus, mpox is a known virus. Experts believe it is unlikely to lead to a widespread pandemic.

Children seem to be at higher risk, as organizations like Save the Children report that they are four times more likely to die from the disease than adults. The disease’s mortality rate among young children is around 10%. In Sweden, established health measures, vaccinations, and antiviral medications are available, reducing the overall risk of a significant outbreak.

Mpox spreads through close physical contact, primarily affecting men who have sex with men, although it can also be transmitted via contaminated surfaces like bedding and towels. Symptoms include rashes and fever, typically resolving within two to four weeks but potentially becoming serious for individuals with weakened immune systems.

Mpox is classified as a dangerous infectious disease, triggering health protection measures such as testing and contact tracing, especially in instances where the disease poses significant challenges.
