A woman sustained serious injuries after falling from an Alcoa employee bus in Egilsstaðir last week. The incident is currently under investigation by East Iceland’s police.

Sigrún Erla Ólafsdóttir, an employee at Alcoa’s Reyðarfjörður plant, suffered multiple injuries while returning home from a night shift. As she exited the bus, its door closed on her, causing her to fall into the path of the bus as it began to move. Sigrún has broken bones in both feet, and her left leg suffered severe skin damage, raising concerns about a possible serious infection and the risk of amputation.

Following the incident, she was airlifted to a hospital in Akureyri, where she remains under medical care after undergoing surgery, with additional operations planned. Her family has expressed that despite the gravity of her condition, Sigrún’s spirit remains resilient, though a long recovery lies ahead.

The police confirmed the ongoing investigation aims to clarify the circumstances that led to this accident. They have also notified the labor inspection authority and are collaborating with other relevant organizations, including the Transportation Safety Investigation Board.

ÍS-Travel, the bus company managing transportation for Alcoa employees, expressed regret over the incident and is cooperating with the investigation both internally and alongside Alcoa. The bus driver has not been removed from duty during the investigation.

Alcoa’s communications director stated that protocols are activated following such incidents, focusing on determining the causes and implementing preventive measures to avoid future occurrences. The company’s priority remains the safety and well-being of its employees.
