Finland researcher calls for shift in attitude towards technology use

A researcher at the University of Turku, sociologist Kristiina Tammisalo, believes that Finland needs a shift in attitude towards technology use. This change in perspective is necessary for both children and adults. Tammisalo points out that Finland is still navigating its digital transformation but must now also address the challenges posed by technology, such as excessive use of digital devices.

“This is an intimate aspect of life that is crucial for well-being,” Tammisalo emphasizes. Having researched the use of communication tools among family members, she suggests that media consumption within homes can be broadly categorized into two types: personal usage on devices alone and shared experiences.

“More and more media use is solitary. It is not in any way shared within the family,” she observes. With devices constantly in our pockets, individuals tend to engage with the most captivating content available.

“This device contains many tools that are essential for our daily lives, but it also harbors popular applications that constantly compete for users’ attention,” the researcher notes. The rising trend of personal media consumption is likely to have long-term negative effects on family relationships, she concludes.
