The board of the Trondheim Labour Party has put forth a proposal prior to tonight’s meeting of the party’s representative body, which includes representatives from all local branches in Trondheim. However, the board is divided. The majority has no proposal, while the minority has suggested a list of five top candidates for the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) from the Labour Party in the Sør-Trøndelag constituency. Notably, Trond Giske is not among these five candidates, although Karianne Tung, Kirsti Leirtrø, Sara Shafighi, Per Olav Skurdal Hopsø, and a candidate from the AUF (youth wing) are.

Nils Nesjan, a delegate from Byåsen Labour Union, has already indicated his intention to support Giske for the top position on the list. He has stated that he will wait until the evening meeting to explain his reasons for wanting Giske in the Storting. Giske has yet to respond to media inquiries on the matter.

With 84 of the total 178 delegates present from Giske’s local branch, the Nidaros social democratic forum, he will need additional support to secure a place on the list. Political editor Siv Sandvik believes Giske has a good chance of gathering enough votes, particularly since local party members are keen on having him return to the Storting.

Even though the final list of candidates for the Storting won’t be finalized until November, tonight’s meeting holds significant importance. The board has unanimously recommended that two of the first four candidates on the Storting list come from Trondheim. Giske’s potential comeback has been a topic of speculation since he returned to politics following internal party turbulence earlier in the year.
