In the serene landscape of Innerdalen, Norway, where lush grass meets roaming cows and sheep, lies Renndølsetra, a destination for both visitors and locals. One hour’s hike from the parking area leads to this idyllic spot, which is adorned with the aroma of freshly baked waffles and cinnamon rolls. Frøya Jørgensdatter (21) from Stjørdal has returned each summer to work at Renndølsetra since turning 18, drawn to the captivating environment since her first visit at age ten. She describes the experience as a “dream summer,” relishing the positive work atmosphere and variety of tasks, especially enjoying the presence of cows.

During the summer, Jørgensdatter and her colleagues reside on-site, with some opting to sleep in the barn for a unique experience, although they have access to indoor accommodations if desired. The demand for summer jobs is significantly higher in smaller municipalities compared to urban areas; in this case, the local government invested half a million kroner to create job opportunities for youth.

Eystein Opdøl, who has managed Renndølsetra since he was 15, reflects on the family history of bringing animals to this summer pasture since 1740. Alongside his partner Jan Håvard Knee, who joined the operation in 2008, they face long, busy days serving both local hikers and international tourists.

Felicia Seger (19), a Swedish team member, expresses her satisfaction with working at the café after her parents purchased a cabin nearby during the pandemic. Captivated by the charming atmosphere on her hikes to the setra, she reached out last year for a job and has returned for another season, indicating plans to continue for years to come.
