A fatal accident occurred in the center of Kongsberg on Wednesday morning, when a woman was struck by a truck that subsequently left the scene. Witnesses reported the incident to the police, leading to the identification and stop of a truck driver in his 70s based on their descriptions. Upon being questioned, the driver admitted to being in the area but claimed he was unaware of having hit anyone.

Investigative leader Jarle Lindeland noted, “He says he did not feel the impact of hitting her.” Despite his claims, the man has been charged with negligent driving and has had his driving license temporarily revoked. The police emphasize that this tragic incident is a prioritized case undergoing rapid investigation, as they seek to interview more witnesses to clarify the events leading up to the accident.

The truck involved was a 10-meter-long vehicle, and the incident took place at an intersection near a railway underpass. According to the Norwegian Truck Owners Association, it is not uncommon for truck drivers to be unaware of such incidents due to the size and blind spots of heavy vehicles. Regional manager Roy N. Wetterstad commented on the psychological impact of such knowledge on drivers, regardless of fault. “Suddenly being informed that you were involved in a fatal accident is every truck driver’s worst fear,” he stated, highlighting a concerning trend of severe accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists in blind spots.
