For some children, school can evoke fear, while for others it may create a positive sense of nervousness, which can be difficult to distinguish. “It can be a joyful flutter that one might not quite understand. There’s a strange feeling in the body,” says Reyhaneh Ahangaran, an author and psychologist. Negative feelings of anxiety may manifest as sleep difficulties, irritability, or even stomach pain. “Children’s emotions must be taken seriously,” she emphasizes.
In a video, Ahangaran offers three concrete tips on how parents can discuss worries with their children as the school year approaches.
