Former rector of the University of Oulu, Lauri Lajunen, expressed that he was not surprised by the current rector, Jouko Niinimäki’s, decision not to seek a new term. Niinimäki’s two terms have raised concerns among students regarding the working atmosphere at the university, prompting significant public discussion. He has also faced criticism for his lack of participation in societal dialogue.

According to Mikko Ayub, chairman of the university’s board, the board can legally invite candidates who have not applied for the position. Niinimäki has not responded to inquiries about his availability should he be asked to continue.

Lajunen, who led the university for 21 years prior to Niinimäki, shared his insights on what makes a good rector and his impressions of the applicant pool. Among the candidates are Helka-Liisa Hentilä, chair of the university collegium, and former vice-rector; Mika Hannula, vice-rector at the University of Turku; and professor Mikael Collan from Lappeenranta University of Technology.

The board is set to select candidates for interviews on August 15. Some applicants lack proficiency in Finnish, which Lajunen argues could hinder their effectiveness as rector, possibly necessitating a shift in the university’s administrative language to English, resulting in complications internally and in community relations.

The increasing number of applicants indicates a growing interest in the rector position, which Lajunen believes has become a career opportunity attracting interest beyond the university’s own ranks. While international experience is valuable, Lajunen emphasizes the importance of trust and communication among university stakeholders. The role demands someone who can make tough decisions transparently while maintaining open channels with students and staff.
