Community members in Sukkertoppen are rallying together for an ambitious project to construct a new hiking trail that will enhance accessibility to the scenic Sukkertoppen mountain. Yvonne Haagensen expressed excitement about the completion of the trail, which would offer breathtaking views of Ålesund, the surrounding islands, and the sea.

The initiative aims to have the trail finished in time for the opening of a new sports hall in Skarbøvika. This development will result in additional parking spaces, sanitation facilities, and access to bottled water, encouraging more visitors to explore the mountain.

Community participation is crucial, with volunteers welcomed to join in the trail construction efforts. Increased foot traffic on hiking trails can significantly improve public health, as more outdoor activities contribute to fitness. However, the project also addresses the need to protect the natural environment, as the old trail had suffered from heavy use.

Local businesses have shown tremendous support, with many stepping up to help finance the project, alongside contributions from banks catering to community needs. Approximately four million kroner have been raised so far, though additional funding will likely be necessary as the project progresses.

In addition to the main trail, Sukkertoppen’s association plans to develop two extra features: a sheltered area designed to resemble a snail shell and a lookout point, both inspired by Snøhetta’s architectural vision. Community members have already begun tracking trail usage, with a recent day setting a new record of over 600 hikers.

The new stone pathway will provide a better hiking experience, encouraging more outdoor enthusiasts while fostering a connection with nature. As the project advances, it promises to transform the hiking experience in the area.
