Efforts are underway to construct a new trail leading up to Sukkertoppen, aimed at improving access to the scenic views of Ålesund and its surrounding islands. Yvonne Haagensen of Sukkertoppen Vel expresses excitement about the new path, which is expected to enhance the hiking experience and encourage more visitors to enjoy the mountain.

Local residents are enthusiastically invited to participate in the volunteer work necessary for the trail’s completion. The goal is to finish the project by the opening of a new sports hall in Osane, Skarbøvika, which will also provide additional parking, sanitation facilities, and bottled water, thereby increasing accessibility to the mountain.

Leiv Grønnevet, Yvonne Haagensen, and Olav Lillebø are spearheading the trail construction. Community involvement is vital for such projects, reflecting a strong commitment from locals and businesses. Grønnevet commends the willingness of local companies to financially support the initiative, highlighting that they have raised approximately four million kroner, although more funds will likely be needed.

The ambition is not just for a trail but for a fully enriched experience. Plans include building a shelter in the shape of a snail shell, designed by Snøhetta, and creating an observation point. With new stones laid along the path, the trail will be more enjoyable to navigate, as evidenced by recent data showing a record of over 600 hikers in one day.

The previous trail had widened significantly due to user avoidance of muddy areas, resulting in increased wear on the landscape. The new path aims to rectify this, promoting better stewardship of the natural environment while encouraging more people to explore the mountain.
