School turnaround at Svebølle School in Kalundborg leads to improved student well-being

Last school year, around one in six students at Svebølle School in Kalundborg were socially struggling. Likka Grann-Sommer from the 9th grade recalls a time when the school had a reputation as one that few wanted to attend. However, recent findings from a national survey indicated a significant turnaround. The school managed to halve the percentage of students who felt they didn’t belong, were bullied, felt unaccepted, or disliked break times. As a result, the reputation of Svebølle School improved.

Likka noted that, being a small school, relationships among students are closer, leading to increased motivation to attend school. In her class, she observed that students were happier and more focused.

Students are encouraged to voice their ideas for improvements to the school council, and there is now a greater willingness to listen to their suggestions. This past year, the implementation of a moped workshop, a gala for older students, and the hiring of a movement coordinator have contributed positively to the school environment. Additionally, physical spaces are being modified to provide 7th to 9th graders with areas where they can relax without disturbance from younger students.

Jarl Falk Sabroe, the school principal, expressed pride in the significant improvements as students reported a better school experience. School council chair Asta Nielsen noted an increased involvement of students in planning activities, which has fostered a more engaging school environment.

Tasja Wetendorff Jørgensen shared her personal transformation since the introduction of the moped workshop. Previously struggling with focus in class, she now feels more engaged and has developed aspirations of becoming a mechanic.
