Anni Tapio, a 19-year-old cyclist from Rovaniemi, Finland, has had her share of biking accidents, suffering only minor injuries, including a hairline fracture. Despite the risks associated with downhill biking, Tapio has excelled, winning gold in the N23 category at the national mountain biking championships this summer.

While downhill biking gains popularity, it also contributes to a rise in injuries. According to Aino Loimu, the acting chief physician at the Lapland central hospital, most incidents result in minor injuries, such as bone fractures, although some patients require hospitalization for severe injuries like internal organ damage.

In downhill biking, injuries often occur when cyclists fall off their bikes, leading to upper body injuries. Tapio shared her experience, noting that a sudden stop can lead to loss of control, causing serious accidents.

The actual number of biking accidents remains uncertain. Harri Lindfors, executive director of the Finnish Ski Resort Association, highlighted the challenges in collecting statistics on downhill biking accidents compared to skiing accidents, which are better documented. Information often only surfaces through social media, making it difficult to improve safety protocols.

Aleksi Latvala from the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency emphasized that improving communication about these incidents is essential to enhance overall safety in the biking community. Downhill biking has been growing steadily for the past two decades, shifting from a niche activity to a more mainstream sport, prompting increased safety measures and the establishment of bike patrols at resorts.

Lindfors noted ongoing efforts to make routes more accessible and safer, catering to a broader audience while maintaining awareness of the potential risks involved.
